Domain Registration

Domain names are unique identifiers used to help find websites on the Internet. In much the same way that your first and last names help to identify who you are to others, domain names enable you to easily find and surf to your favorite websites just by typing that domain name registration address) into your browser window.
Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for computers on the Internet (such as internic.net). They correspond to a series of numbers (called Internet Protocol numbers) that serve as routing addresses on the Internet. Domain names are used generally as a convenient way of locating information and reaching others on the Internet. Each domain name registration with what’s known as an extension. A domain name registration is another tool of identification. An extension or TLD (Top Level Domain) consists of the last few letters following the final period or “dot” in the name itself. The extension /TLD for google.com is “.com.” There are a host of top-level domain name registration available today, such as:

Domains: Buying an Existing Domain Name Vs a New Domain Name

No one can deny that the Internet is here to stay and that businesses who do not embrace the internet are going to struggle in the coming years. With the Internet and Search Engines reaching a new level of maturity, I have noticed in their rankings that they are beginning to put more and more weight on the age of the domain in their index and because of this we have now reached a crossroad for many businesses to evaluate whether they are better off buying an existing domain versus registering a brand new domain. But Buyer Beware!

I have met many many people who have benefited and also been burnt by buying existing domain names. The major disadvantage of buying an existing domain name is that it may have been banned from the search engines for in appropriate search engine tactics, better known as black hat techniques. My own personal experience with the search engines and trying to talk to a human being in the past to plead my case over an issue with one of our own domains has made me come to the realization that none of them have a clue of what customer service is and they do not care what they do to you and this is where the problem lies when buying existing domains.

If you purchase a domain that has been banned for either Search Engine Black Hat techniques or for click fraud then you can pretty much write off that domain ever getting into the indexes ever again. Which means that if you are relying principally on traffic from the search engines, then you are going to invest a lot of money and get absolutely no outcome? In fact one of our own clients was caught where the domain they had purchased was banned in just about every index and by many of the pay-per-click engines as well. Literally the money they outlaid for this domain were totally wasted.

Look, there are many reasons why domains can be banned and in some cases they are banned by indexes for the owners simply not understanding the rules that the various search engines place on the websites that they index. Whilst that is no excuse in the scheme of things, as a buyer it is something you need to be aware of.

The key advantage of buying an existing domain that has been indexed is that it is often easier to optimize that site for certain keywords than it is for using one that is a brand new domain. If you believe the stories of Google's sandbox rule, then all new domains will take 6 to 12 months to rank well which means for a business that is purely internet based that could send you bankrupt and I can assure you I have seen that happen. Whether or not you believe or do not believe that the Google sandbox rule exists, in most search engines, the age of the domain in the index does play a role in your ranking. I have seen webpages in the index that have been there for 10 years and have less than 20 back links on extremely competitive terms and rank in the top 5 of those competitive keywords.

The bottom line is this, where possible and if you can afford it, buying an existing domain name that is already in the index is a valuable commodity. Even more so if there is an associated website to go with it. Just look at the money Google paid to You Tube for their site.

Over the last few years my team and I have helped many clients broker existing domain names, usually associated with their companies name, that have been in the index by people creating adsense accounts for Google or Yahoo and once they get control of the domains they have seen vast improvements in their traffic flow and search engine positions because the domains they had bought had been in the index for some period. In fact every one of them that has done this now has top 2 rankings in all the major search engines.

When we are evaluating domains that have been owned for some period there are a range of elements that my team and I look for. The general elements we review include -

1. Is the website currently working? 2. Does the domain exist in any of the major search engines 3. Can you verify ownership of the domain or is the domain details blocked? 4. Where is the domain currently residing? 5. Is the domain in an area on the Internet that is used by black hat people or organizations that use questionable techniques? 6. What is the IP Number of the server the domain resides on? 7. Can we find any indications of references to issues with this domain name on professional search engine forums or bloggs? 8. Does the domain reside on any black lists for spam or for activities related to advertising? We also look to see if the domain is on any number of white lists as well (this is a positive issue)? 9. Does the domain have a history in traffic tools such as Alexa? Have there been any comments or statements placed in the Alexa Register or similar registers? 10. Is the domain registered with a reputable domain registration company?

My team and I will also look at whether or not this domain has been owned by a range of different companies or individuals and in particular if it has been deleted or pre-owned before today and resold.

I should note that there are many other issues we look at but the ten above are the key issues everyone should look at when deciding to buy an existing domain. There are many reasons why domains may not have positive findings for each of the issues above, but just like you were trying to buy a business you need to see if there are any issues and if there are can they be dealt with and are they likely to cost you money. Nobody likes to lose money on a deal, especially me, and when buying domains you need to make sure that you have done your homework and that the domain is worth the money you are investing.

Sometimes, you are better off simply paying a few dollars and putting in a lot of hard work with a new domain then buying a domain for a few thousand dollars to find that you can never rank well in the search engines because it has been banned.

What’s in a (domain) name? Yahoo to offer ymail, rocketmail

Yahoo's free e-mail service has been around long enough that, if you want to sign up now, there's a good chance you won't get the address you want. Is your name Helen Funk? HelenFunk@yahoo.com is gone -- you'll end up with HelenFunk95940300958@yahoo.com . . . if you're lucky.

That's why Yahoo today will begin letting folks sign up for brand new e-mail addresses under two domains -- ymail and rocketmail. It also gives Yahoo a chance to grow its matured e-mail business. Starting at about 2 p.m. CDT, you can be part of a rush to get a decent e-mail address that runs through Yahoo's servers and Web-mail interface.

Ymail is obviously a play on Gmail, Google's excellent mail service. From Mashable:

Ymail, on the other hand, is a clear jab at Gmail. Although Yahoo Mail is the market leader with the most users (266 million worldwide in April), Google caused a major disruption when they offered nearly unlimited storage capacity. That, along with the fact that Gmail was great at killing spam and really easy to use, was enough to grab a big piece of the free e-mail market -- 101 million users in April, according to the AP. Yahoo and Microsoft have, for the most part, caught up with Gmail's storage offering -- Yahoo Mail now offers unlimited storage -- but Gmail is now killing them with features and great integration with other Google services.

Rocketmail was a free e-mail service that Yahoo acquired with an acquisition in 1997. I had a Rocketmail account, and loved it for the same reasons I love Gmail today - it was simple, clean, fast and easy to use. The 2008 version, though, will point at Yahoo's current interface.

If you want to grab a better e-mail address, hop onto Yahoo's mail site at 2 p.m. CDT today. If Yahoo's servers can survive the onslaught, you might be able to walk away with an address that makes sense.

Update: Some users trying to sign up are only seeing @yahoo.com as the domain name, while others see a dropdown box letting you choose from @yahoo.com, @ymail.com and @rocketmail.com. If you don't have a choice, trying coming at the page from mail.yahoo.com or www.ymail.com. You may have to make several stabs at it before the dropdown appears.

Choosing a Domain Name

Domain names, like yahoo.com, give customers an easy way to remember how to find you.

Yahoo! Store can automatically register and transfer domain names, and forward emails for .com, .net, and .org domains. We can also provide name service and hosting for other types of domain names such as country code top level domains (ccTLD), but because other naming authorities do not have automated registration processes, you must register for ccTLD domain names yourself.

Yahoo! Store also provides email forwarding for domain names you register through your Store account.

Domain registration is $35 per year to register a new domain. Domain transfers are $10 per year.

What makes a good domain name?
A good domain name should be easy to remember, easy to spell, and preferably short. The name of your company is always a good choice. If your desired domain name is already taken, you can search if the .net or .org variation is available. You may also use hyphens to create unique domain names.
What characters are allowed?
.Com, .net, and .org domain names must meet these requirements: They cannot exceed 67 characters, including the characters in the suffix (63 characters plus the 4 character .xyz). Only letters, numbers, or hyphens are permitted. A domain name may not begin or end with a hyphen. These requirements are not set by Yahoo!. They are part of the regulatory standards that .com, .net and .org domain names must follow.
What's the difference between http://yahoo.com and http://www.yahoo.com?
Not a lot. By default, Yahoo! Store makes both URLs work. You can advertise whichever one you like the best.
Do I need to put the http:// on?
Probably not. Most web sites just advertise www.widgetdesigns.com. The www. is a good enough clue to people that it's a web address, so you don't need to say it. All popular browsers let you simply type www.widgetdesigns.com into the URL window.
Should I get a lot of domain names?
You may register and own an unlimited number of domain names. In addition to .com, many people register the .net and .org variations of their primary domain name. Each domain name costs $35.00 per year. If you already own a domain name, you can transfer it for $10.00 per year.
Who owns the domain name I register?
If you register a domain name through Yahoo! Store, you may designate the Registrant (owner) and Administrator. Yahoo! is only listed as the technical contact and nameservers. As the Registrant, you have final authority and responsibility regarding the use of your domain name. For more information, refer to the Yahoo! Store Domain Service Agreement.
How can I change my domain name?
Changing a domain name associated with a Yahoo! Store is not possible. You can, however, register a new domain name then keep or cancel the old one.
What is the public domain name database?
A public domain name database (also known as Whois) contains contact information for all domain names. There are many registrars that register .com, .net and, .org domain names. Each of these registrars maintain their own public domain database

Yahoo! Store registers your domain name through Internet Names Worldwide (Melbourne IT)*, an ICANN Accredited registrar.
The personal contact information you provide as the Registrant and Administrative contact is used to register your domain name. As required by the Internet's governing organization (ICANN), this information will be made publicly available. For more information, refer to the Yahoo! Store Domain Service Agreement.

Records of all domain names registered by the registrar, Internet Names Worldwide, are maintained in their public domain domain database. The information includes Registrant, Administrator, technical contact, and nameserver information as well as record creation, update, and expiration dates. This information is available through many publicly accessible interfaces. You'll find a list of whois resources in Yahoo!'s directory.
How do I update my contact information in the public domain database?
The personal information you provided in your order was used to register your domain name. As required by ICANN, the Internet governance organization, this information was made publicly available. If you would like to change or update this contact information, please contact customer care.

Please note: If you registered your domain name through Yahoo! Store before March 21, 2001, your domain name's registrar is Network Solutions. Update your contact information by going to the Manage It section at Network Solutions.

What is the difference between .com, .net, and .org domain names?
Originally, the three letter suffix after the dot in domain names indicates whether the domain name was used for commercial (.COM), network (.NET), or non-profit (.ORG) purposes.

Although there are guidelines, anyone may register these regardless of the intended use.

.Net and .org suffixes are good alternatives if the domain names you want in .com is already taken.

Cancelling your Yahoo! Store
Once you cancel your Yahoo! Store, you will be responsible for all future domain registration and renewal fees. Your domain name will remain registered to you unless you either contact the registrar, Melbourne IT to delete the domain name or you stop paying the domain renewal fees.

*If you registered your domain name through Yahoo! Store before March 21, 2001, your domain name’s registrar is Network Solutions.

Cheap Domains

Choosing a domain name is a key decision in planning a new website. Many online services can help you select a domain name for your site. Fortunately, site registrars offer great service, even on cheap domain name selections. Your cheap domain name can make a significant difference in your search engine rankings and more. Think carefully when you choose your new cheap domain name to select one that will be easy for your customers and clients to remember, easy to spell, and ideal for search engines. With a few simple tips, you can choose a cheap domain name that will make your business a successful online venture.

Search engines such as Google place value on the keywords within a domain name; however, selecting an overly long domain name is a poor choice for your human customers. If you can select a cheap domain name that includes some of your desired keywords, it will likely improve your search engine rankings. Try and select a name that is short and also contains a keyword. Your customers may find longer or more complex domain names hard to spell or remember, and thus reduce the usefulness of your online presence. Avoid hyphens if possible, as extraneous punctuation in a domain name makes it less useful for search engines and for your customers as well.

Your domain name can also impact which markets are apt to view your site. If you wish to appeal to the UK market, choose a .co.uk domain when you register your cheap domain name. The .co.uk will help if you want to target the UK market, but will put off some international visitors. A .com will help if you want to target international markets, but you will perform slightly less well on local searches. Knowing your intended market can be a helpful tool when you choose your cheap domain name. While some customers will buy regardless of domain extension, and some search engines will put little value on this, it is a factor to consider. Your site content, accessibility and other features will matter more to your customers than your domain name; however, this is a useful detail to consider.

Location of your web hosting is important – a .com domain and a US host will tell the search engine that you are US based. This can impact your overall search engine rankings, particularly with regard to local searches. A .co.uk and a UK host will locate you in the UK. A domain with the extension .co.uk and US host will also identify you as UK based. If you wish to appeal to a wider international audience, a .com extension may be a helpful domain option for your business. Businesses seeking local UK customers and clientele may find that the .co.uk extension is ideal for both their customers and their search engine rankings.

While your first priority when choosing a domain name may be its ease of use for your customers and clients do consider the impact of domain names on search engine rankings. Your search engine rankings are impacted by many things, and your domain name is one of those. Choose a short, easy to remember and spell domain name. Consider including keywords in your domain name if at all possible to further improve your rankings. The search engines do look at the likely location of your domain, and you may find it helpful to consider the implications of your domain name on your assumed location. With these helpful tips, your cheap domain name can be a useful asset and tool for your business.

Rewarding Expired Domains

Reap the rewards from other people’s hard work. Often a difficult goal, but this is exactly what you can achieve with expired domains.

Broadly speaking, the life cycle of an expired domain has been:

1 - the domain is registered
2 - a website is built on the domain
3 - the domain is promoted
4 - the domain receives visitors
5 - the domain is not re-registered and the domain expires

Once the domain expires, visitors will still arrive at the domain, only to see that there is no website there any longer. These visitors could be visiting your website.

A lot of effort goes into building a website. And as any web site owner will tell you, getting visitors to your site is a long hard struggle. Nevertheless if you can register a domain that already receives visitors, the gives you valuable a head start.

Finding one of these visited expired domains can be tricky, and then actually registering them before any one else manages to can be even harder. There are several websites that specialize in grabbing these domains on your behalf, and some list the domains that are about to expire in the next few days. You can go through this list of domains, and find any with names that seem relevant to your chosen topic.

With this shortened list of domains, you can then conduct research into each domain. The most important thing to check is to see how many backlinks they have - i.e., how many websites link to each domain. On many search engines, using the phrase “link:” (note the colon) before the full domain URL will return the number of links pointing at a given domain. For example, type in something like link:http://www.domain.com (note that frequently you shouldn’t use any spaces). In general, the more backlinks there are, the more visitors the domain will receive.

There are several other checks that can be carried out on a domain, but finding the number of backlinks is generally the most important.

Once you have found a domain you like, you then need to register it the moment it becomes available - before any one else does. I would strongly recommend using one of the many websites that offer this service - they have the know-how and beating them to the registration could be a hard task. Also, some of these services have exclusive rights to re-register the domain before any one else, so it may not be possible to grab the domain by yourself.

Your next step should be to check out the different services, and see if any of them have exclusivity on your chosen domain. If none of them do, then chose the services you like the look of, and get them all to chase the domain on your behalf. Most of these services will only charge you if they manage to get the domain on your behalf.

You may need to go through this process several times before you successfully register an expired domain that matches your criteria. As you can imagine this may take up a lot of your time.

I can recommend using another service in this field - there are several website out there that can carry out the legwork for you. They list the domains that are about to expire, along with the number of backlinks, and search engine rankings. They are well worth taking a look at.

Why Register UK Domains?

Why register UK Domains?

UK Domains are the 1st choice domain for most UK home users and businesses being the 2nd most popular country code domain. NominetUK is the registry for all UK domain registrations. They manage over five million domain names, making them the world’s fourth largest Internet registry.

NominetUK was not set up and is not constituted to make a profit from its activities. Accordingly its charges are sufficient only to cover its operating costs.

Nevertheless UK domain names are different to the standard com, net & org domains having completely unique system of management Unlike all other types of domain tld’s NominetUK uses a Tag holder system for domain management

A Tag is one word all in capitals. The Tag is displayed within the WHOIS records and uniquely identifies a registration agent

Tag holders have the authority to register names on behalf their customers. Of course it is possible to register a domain direct with NominetUK but this is usually a more expensive option as the current rate is £80 + Tax for 2 years.

Tag holders usually provide a discounted rate for domain registrations and renewals and have the authority to delegate nameservers for the domain which they manage.

So what is the advantage of registering a UK domain name?

First, if you are a business trading in the UK, this kind of domain is the ‘natural’ choice.

Why?…Because it is familiar to the UK public. In general customers feel comfortable knowing that the website from which they are considering buying is based in their country of origin and if this is the UK then a ‘.Co.uk’ ending is the natural choice.

Many UK compaines would also register the .Com domain besides the ‘.Co.uk’ and maybe park it on the same website or create a doorway page to the same site.

Although the UK domain reassures the, the user they are dealing with a UK company, a dot com domain is the 1st choice for search engine ranking since this kind of domain tends to rank higher than any other ending (excluding MSN which tends to favour .Org domain names)

So if you are considering a starting-up a website trading in the UK as your target market it is wise to register both the ‘.Co.uk’ and the .Com if they are available.

Domains Names & Web Design

Evidently for many aspects of working online you will need your own website. Depending on what you want to do it is not always possible to function without one.

If you are going to be working as an affiliate or are considering doing freelancing or data entry then you may be able to get away without one but for everything else you will need to build a website. Nevertheless, it’s ok, I am here to tell you that doesn’t have to be as frightening a prospect as it may at first seem.

There are many people who will build your website for you and not all of them will cost an arm and a leg although the price does vary depending on what you want.

The other option of course, is to build the site yourself and although this is not something that you will be able to do over night there is a lot of technology and software out there that will help you do just that. Again the prices can vary dramatically depending on what you want to do but there are also a lot of free resources if you look.

Nevertheless before you get to build your site you need to have a name for it. I once received some very good advice about deciding a name for your site and it was this “Just get on with it”

Many people find themselves suffering from what’s known as ‘Analysis Paralysis’. We so desperately want to come up with a success sounding name that we spend days deciding what to call ourselves only to find when we go to register it that it has already been taken.

How to choose your domain name:

Consider this:

1.What does your business do?
2.Who does it do it for?
3.What is you unique selling position – in other words what have you got that the others haven’t that will make people want to come to you?
4.What is your name?

The last one may seem a bit odd but I’ll get back to that in just a minute. After considering the first 3 points come up with a list of several names that you could use and then take them to a domain registrar and see which ones are available for you to use.

Prices don’t vary too wildly but it is worth a look around.

.Com names are among the most expensive and with good reason, as it is the first extension the people will type if they are unsure of your full address and the most professional sounding. Stay away from cheaper more obscure extensions they may not cost as much but you need to consider what kind of image you want to portray to your customers.

Almost all domain registration services will offer free extras such as domain and email forwarding, if the company you are using doesn’t offer these basic add ons then say thank you and move onto one that does.

4. What is your name?

There is one domain name you should definitely register and that is yourname.com.

Why? Because branding yourself in your market is a brilliant way of letting people know not only who you are and what you do but also that you are very serious about it and take pride in your position. Think about it, would you want your name branded on something that wasn’t up to par, and that’s exactly how your customers are going to see it too “Oh, Denise has put her name to this so she must think it is a high quality product/service”

And while it is a high quality item your name will become synonymous with quality in your field.

Warning: some domain registrars, on closing your account due to spam complaints, missed payments or any other reason will retain the name that you purchased and assume ownership of it. Meaning that you will not be able to re-register it anywhere else, and so will loose all the traffic that you may have spent months directing to that address. As with all things be sure to read the small print – it’s small for a reason.

Ok so now that you have your name it’s time to choose your web host.

Quite often this can be one I the same provider and so if you are going to use your registered name as the address for your site then be sure to register it with them as it saves you having to transfer things over later.

So what do you need from your web host?

It is essential to know that whatever goes wrong with your site there will be someone that you can contact, preferably by phone 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There is nothing worse than sending a helpdesk ticket for support and not receiving a response for 3 days, and the best way to find out how good the support system is, is to ask their customers. Visit forums and ask questions or search articles and read reviews also ask your friends and colleagues who they use and if they would recommend them.

Building Your Site

As I mentioned before there are many people out there that will build your site for you. All you need to do give them the details and the premise and they will take on all the technical work for you. To have your website professionally designed and built from scratch can cost you anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. And there are many places where you can find companies to do it for you.

However, if you like a challenge and have basic computer capabilities it is perfectly feasible that you can build your own site depending on just what you want it to be.

If you decide to take the challenge on yourself then my first suggestion would be to find some help, support and guidance. If you are quite new to web design there will be many things that can throw you and if you don’t have someone to ask it can become frustrating. Again joining a forum is one of the best ways to find help from like minded people or you can just use the power of the web to find a place where you feel comfortable enough to ask.

There are some things that you will need:
A domain name – Clear, concise and easy to remember. Also be careful with names the people can easily misspell.

A web hosted – Good customer support is essential. Also check uptime and bandwidth.

Web page templates – Depending on your products/services your site should have a certain consistent feel to it all the way through.

Html editor software – Html is a very complicated language, if you don’t know it or don’t want to learn then you will need software that can do it for you. There are much free programmes.

Ftp software – This is how you get your site from your desktop to your server. All FTP software is basically the same but if you are new then stick with the more basic versions until you figure out what you’ll need the rest for.

Header, footer and other graphics – All websites need graphics of some kind. There packages that you can buy online and edit to your liking or you can spend around $60 - $100 and get the basics has done for you.

Those are the very bare basics that you need to be able to start building your site, you will also need to consider e-commerce, download protection, and a few other factors depending on what your site will do.

Turn Domains Into Dollars 10 Hot Tips

Check out these recent ‘colossal’ domain name sale prices! Massive Profits are well and truly back in the news. (Truth be told, they’ve never really been out of it). With ‘big’ money at stake, it’s no wonder the Domain Name Barron’s prefer to keep an extremely low profile. Here’s 10 Hot Tips to turn ‘your’ domains into dollars.

Tip 1. (More a ‘revelation’ than a tip). Did you know that there are now businesses specially set up to ‘finance’ those looking to buy domain names? Were you aware that there are multi-million dollar companies, whose sole activity is buying, selling, parking or leasing domain names? Why is this relevant? Well, these ‘major players’ are not in it for fun. They know (for sure) there’s ‘big bucks’ to be made from domain names.

Tip 2. When it comes to turn domains into dollars, names ending in .Com are still ‘king’. The two worded domain name http://DataRecovery.com went for a whopping $1,659,000.00 in the first 2008, whereas the one word http://Fund.com when for a simply staggering $9,999,950.00 in the same month / year. OK, your chances of getting hold of a good ‘one word’ domain are slim, but bear in mind that, as the price of such exclusive domains increase in value, a knock-on effect occurs. Down the road, sales of this magnitude can influence prices paid for good ‘two-word’ (and even ‘three-word’) domain names.

The best domain names are those consisting of generic terms / expressions (and ‘keywords’). ‘Anti Virus’ is an example of a generic expression.

Tip 3. Understand, it’s not just dot com domain names that sell. There’s money to be made from other Top Level Domains (TLD’s) too. I.e. .Net.Org.Info and .Biz.

FilmSchool.net and http://WallStreet.info sold in 2008 for $49,501.00 and $25,500 respectively. If you had discovered either of those examples as an ‘unregistered name’, you would probably have been asked to pay no more than $10 to secure your prize!

Perhaps more appropriately, numerous sales in the $0000 and $000 price range occur every month.

If the .Com version of a domain name is already registered, you must take care to avoid identical domain names (with different name extensions) where ‘brand name’ or ‘trademark’ infringement might be an issue.

However, if the dot com name is a pure generic name (e.g. Christmas Tree) then it may be safe to snap up one of the other TLDs or a Geo / Regional version of the same domain name as (to the best of my knowledge) it’s still the case that obvious ‘generic’ terms cannot successfully be protected by trademark registration. (But don’t rely on this, always investigate and take professional advise).

Tip 4. When it comes to domain names with ‘country’ or ‘region’ specific extensions, exciting 6 figure sales are occurring. Don’t believe me? Well note that http://FreeCreditReport.co.uk sold in 2008 for a very healthy $300,000. (Wish I’d turned that domain into dollars).

Tip 5. Domain Names don’t have to be short and memorable to warrant a fantastic 6 digit purchase price. Demand is steadily increasing for sensible names, composed of one or more words that clearly describe a marketable product or service. Why? Every year the number of businesses goings online increases dramatically. (Work it out for yourself).

Tip 6. Don’t for one moment think that ‘flipping’ (i.e. buying in the hope of immediately reselling) is the only way to turn your domains into dollars. If you acquire several domain names, you should investigate developing some into websites that you can then sell, along with the domain name. Doing this can add a lot of value to the domain. It also gives you more opportunities to make a sale, as you can look to attract not only those looking for a good domain name, but also folk simply seeking a website with a descent name.

Even if you know nothing about website development, you can get a freelance to build one for you quite cheaply. Web Developers frequently advertise their services through http://elance.com, http://guru.com (or a whole range of other Outsourcing Websites).

Many domain names are suitable for ‘Free Parking’ via services willing to share revenue generated by visitor traffic. Simply type ‘Domain Parking’ into your favourite search engine, then compare offers. Such services effectively host your domain name for free, and can make your domain look more appealing to a prospective buyer.

If a Free Parking Service makes you just $5 each year over and above the annual cost to register your domain name, you’re ahead of the game. OK, $5 a year is not much (unless, that is, you’ve got 100, 1000, or 10,000 domains that are all earning you a $5 profit annually). Do the math! Descent domain names will increase in value overtime so, by parking names to cover their renewal costs, you can afford to sit back and wait at a descent offer. (Win, Win!)

Tip 7. While there was no ‘absolute’ rules, consider carefully before you buy an ‘already registered’ domain name that contains a hyphen, a numeral, or, both. In some instances, you can come out on top, but frequently you’ll be wasting your money. Also, beware of those offering domains that appear to be really great one or two word names until - that is - you realize that the person who registered the name (not necessarily the seller) has used the number ‘0′ (zero) rather than the letter ‘o’ as part of a word. There are other text variations that can create a misleading impression. (So be careful!).

Tip 8. We’ve touched on this point earlier, but it’s very important you avoid names that have been trademarked or - through passage of time - come to be recognised as ‘known brands’. Just because a dot com name is available, don’t jump to the conclusion that the fantastic name you’ve identified is a safe bet.

OK, you may well decide that - for the risk of just a few dollars - you’ll register it while you can, and investigate later. (That’s probably what I’d do!). Nevertheless subsequently, always remember to do your ‘due diligence’ before using such a name, or offering it to someone else.

Bear in mind that some business may (for whatever reasons) chose to go with the .Net.Org or some other extension. Frequently where this applies, those businesses will have taken the sensible precaution of purchasing the .Com version too. Nevertheless not always!

So, irrespective of the extension of any domain name you might be thinking of buying (e.g. .Com.Net.Org. we etc) check to see if anyone has registered / is using the same domain with an alternative extension.

Also bear in mind that there are still some businesses without an internet presence, who may be using that fantastic name you came up with ‘off-line’. Where this applies, they may well have Trademark or similar rights over it.

You can also get your fingers badly burn if you register a deliberate misspelling or ’sound-a-like’ of a famous brand name. My advice? Don’t bother (or check with your lawyer first!)

Tip 9. When it comes to use ‘brand creation’ as means of converting domains into dollars, some businesses deliberately choose (or dream up) domain names with a vague / nebulous quality. This means that, later, they have the option to change what their business does, or move into additional fields, without having to alter their name.

For example, although we all associate Amazon or eBay with what we currently known them for, there’s a chance that - in fifty years time - they could have morphed into new enterprises (which may have nothing to do with the activities we associate them with right now).

You might sometimes be offered, or dream up, domain name ideas that don’t describe or show a specific business or interest area. Such names can be valuable if you can locate someone with cash, who agrees with you. However, more often than not, they will prove very hard to sell, compared to those that give a clear indication of what an internet user might reasonably expect if he / she decides to visit a website with that name.

Tip 10. In this article it’s only been possible to uncover the tip of the iceberg as far as domain name ‘buying & selling tactics’ are concerned. Tip 10 is to realize that, to buy and sell domains like a ‘pro’, you need to get serious about increasing your knowledge, and start planning your strategy. Invest sometime and energy in learning all you can from ‘experts’ to give yourself that essential ‘edge’. Then formulate a campaign to turn those domains into dollars.

What Next?

For any one looking to get a head start I can do no better than point you in the direction of my recommended Knowledge Base http://www.domainnewshub.org

Never forget, just one good idea gleaned from an ‘expert source’ can make you many of money if wisely applied. I take the view that - with a bit of luck - the profits I stand to make by arming myself with ‘inside knowledge’ should more than compensate for any up-front investment of time or money I might choose to make in my future.

Even if you decide that the ‘Knowledge Base’ mentioned above is not for you, you’ll probably pick up some great insights, just by reading what’s revealed in the ‘introduction’.

In my ‘Resources Panel’ - which accompanies this article - you’ll find a link to my website (dedicated to the subject of domain names). Once on my site, you’ll find links to a vast number of useful domains name resources that you really ought to be aware of.

Thanks for taking the time to read this article. Now it’s time for you to turn those domains into dollars.

Getting Started with Yahoo! Domains

Welcome to Yahoo! Domains! This brief guide will help get you started setting up and managing the features of your new web address. If you have any questions along the way, see our Yahoo! Domains Help.

About Your Domain

When you signed up for your plan, you chose a web address, or domain, for your business. Your customers will use this domain, such as learn2yoga.com, to find your business online.

If you recently signed up for Yahoo! Domains, your domain may still be pending. Pending means that your domain is not yet active across the Internet; don't worry, this is normal for all domain registrations and changes, and can take up to 72 hours. The effects of a pending domain:
Web address: If you are registering a new domain, visitors who visit your web address will get a Page Not Found error. If you are using a domain you registered elsewhere, visitors will see the page or web site that is currently active, depending on the settings you have made at your registrar.

Email: Any email messages sent to your domain name may not be delivered while your domain is pending. If you are using a domain you ordered through another provider, your email may be delivered to your registrar until your domain becomes active.

We'll notify you as soon as your domain becomes active. In the meantime, you can begin familiarizing yourself with your Yahoo! plan features!

Using a Domain You Already Own

To use your existing domain name with your Yahoo! plan, you'll need to contact the company where you originally registered your domain, such as Network Solutions, and request a name server change to redirect your existing domain name to Yahoo!

You don't need to understand name servers to make the switch. Just provide your registrar with this information about your new service (be sure to replace learn2yoga.com with your own domain name):

I would like Yahoo! Small Business to host my domain name. Please make the following changes for learn2yoga.com:

Primary name server: yns1.yahoo.com
Primary IP address: 66.218.71.205
Secondary name server: yns2.yahoo.com
Secondary IP address: 66.196.84.168

After you've done this, the change may take up to 72 hours (during this time, your domain will appear as pending).

Note: This process is not a registrar transfer. Your current provider will continue to renew your domain, and you'll pay any associated fees to that provider. Yahoo! will not renew your domain. Learn more.

Your Domain Control Panel

To begin exploring your new domain features, sign in to your account:
Visit your Business Control Panel. (If you haven't entered your Yahoo! ID and password, you'll be prompted to do so here. If you forget your password, click the "Forgot your password?" link and follow the prompts to retrieve it.)
Click "Domain Control Panel."
From here, you'll see a list of tasks, where you can manage all of your Yahoo! Domains services:

Starter Web Page: Create or edit a basic web page for your web address.
Forward Your Domain: Send visitors from your domain to another web site.
Set Up Email Address: Set up your domain name email address.
View/Edit Your Domain Registration: Review and update your WHOIS contact information.
Manage Advanced DNS Settings: Set up CNAME, A Records, and MX records (for advanced users only).

Starter Web Page

When you purchase a Domains, Custom Mailbox, or Business Mail plan, we automatically create a placeholder "Under Construction" web page for you at your web address. To customize this page, you can use our starter web page feature, which allows you to add your name, contact information, and details about your business, as well as change the page design. A starter web page is a great way to establish a presence at your domain until you're ready to build a more comprehensive web site. Learn more.

Note: Do you already have a web site? You can forward traffic from your new domain name to your existing site. Learn how.

Email Features

If you have a Domains plan, you'll also get one free email address! You can specify an email address at your domain, such as linda@learn2yoga.com, and retrieve these messages from your free Yahoo! Mail account (for example, youryahooID@yahoo.com).

You can also take advantage of our "catch-all" feature, which allows any email sent to misaddressed, misspelled, or nonexistent addresses at your domain to be redirected to your Yahoo! Mail account. You can activate this feature in the "Set Up Email Address" task from the Domains Control Panel. Learn more.

Other Settings

From your Domain Control Panel, you can edit both your domain registration information and your advanced DNS settings:
Domain Registration Information: At any time, you can visit this task to edit your registrant and administrator contact information. We recommend keeping this information up-to-date in the event that your domain name registrar or another third party needs to contact you regarding any technical or legal issue with your domain name. Learn more.

Advanced DNS Settings: If you're an advanced user, you can customize your domain name to work with other services. You can add A or CNAME records, or change MX records or your name servers. However, we recommend changing DNS records only if you're an advanced users, as making such changes can prevent your services from functioning properly. If you've made changes and would like to revert to the old settings, you can reset the advanced DNS settings to their default values.

Next Steps

What's next? We'll email you as soon as your domain becomes active. To test this domain, visit your web address at http://www.yourdomain.com (be sure to replace "yourdomain.com" with your own domain name). You should see an "Under Construction" page, or, if you set up a starter web page, your business and contact information in the template you selected. (If you forwarded your domain, you should be redirected to the web address you specified.)

If you need more help setting up or managing the features of your new web address, explore our Domains Help or our Glossary.

Picking and Registering a Domain

The most difficult aspect in choosing a domain name is finding a name that you like that is not already in use. Terms of Service (TOS), located at http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/, the Yahoo! Mail General Guidelines, and any other Yahoo!'s applicable policies and guidelines ("Guidelines") (all together, the "Terms") as well as this Service Agreement (together the "Agreement"). For clarity, Yahoo! Domains is a "Service" as defined in the Yahoo! Terms of Service. Yahoo! may update and change the Agreement from time to time. You can always find the most recent version of this Service Agreement at http://order.sbs.yahoo.com/sbs/tos/domain_tos.html and the most recent version of the Yahoo! Terms of Service at the URL indicated above.

BY COMPLETING THE DOMAIN NAME (I.E., WEB ADDRESS) REGISTRATION PROCESS, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE AGREEMENT SO PLEASE READ ALL THE TERMS CAREFULLY. ANY PERSON OR ENTITY ACTING ON YOUR BEHALF SHALL ALSO BE BOUND BY THESE TERMS AND YOU AGREE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH PERSON'S OR ENTITY'S ACTIONS.

2. THE SERVICE

Subject to the terms of the Agreement, Yahoo! will provide the Service which includes assisting you in acquiring a domain name (i.e., web address) as well as providing you access to certain Yahoo! Software ("Software") to facilitate your use of the Service.

PLEASE NOTE: NOTHING IN THE AGREEMENT OBLIGATES YAHOO! TO LIST OR LINK TO YOUR DOMAIN NAME OR PROVIDE WEBSITE HOSTING SERVICES IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR DOMAIN NAME BEYOND THAT PROVIDED WITHIN THE SERVICE.

You may obtain full-featured website hosting services from Yahoo! Web Hosting at http://webhosting.yahoo.com.

If you are a domains customer and have chosen to activate the email services bundled with the Domain product, you may store up to 10MB of email and attached files (Stored Data) on the system. In the event that more than 10MB of Stored Data is in your account on the system, Yahoo! may in its sole discretion and without notice to you, (i) delete any data in excess of 10MB that is in your account on the system, and (ii) interrupt the sending and receipt of emails through your account.

3. YOUR AGREEMENT WITH INTERNET NAMES WORLDWIDE

If You register a new domain name in conjunction with the Service, the following terms also apply:

Yahoo! has chosen Internet Names Worldwide (a division of Melbourne IT Limited), or "INWW," an ICANN accredited registrar for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domain names, to provide domain name registration services. You hereby authorize Yahoo! to acquire your selected domain name from INWW. In order to receive a domain name, you must agree to INWW's terms and conditions located at http://domains.yahoo.com/inwwagree.html for .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info domain names (INWW gTLD Terms and Conditions) and http://domains.yahoo.com/inwwagree_us.html for .us domain names (INWW .us Terms and Conditions), as may be amended. You understand that you are creating a separate contractual relationship between you and INWW, and that you, and not Yahoo!, are responsible for all fees, liability, and obligations in connection with that relationship. Yahoo may elect to pay INWW such fees, and in that case You will pay Yahoo for those payments. You agree that your obligations to indemnify under "Indemnity" in the Yahoo! Terms of Service includes any claim or demand associated with your domain name, any domain name pre-registration services provided through the Service, or the INWW terms and conditions.

You will be listed as the registrant and administrative contact in connection with your domain name, unless you choose another registrant and administrative contact. If you choose a registrant and administrative contact other than yourself, such person(s) must enter into an agreement directly with the INWW and, additionally, will be bound by this Agreement in addition to yourself. You hereby authorize Yahoo! to list itself as the billing contact, technical contact and name server in connection with your domain name and to take any actions Yahoo! deems appropriate in those capacities. However, upon termination of the Service (either because your account expires or is cancelled by you or by Yahoo! for the reasons described in Section 8 entitled Termination below), Yahoo! may immediately cease acting in those capacities and reserves the right to transfer your account to INWW for collection of past-due amounts. In the event of such transfer, you authorize INWW to serve as the billing contact, technical contact and name server in connection with your domain name, and to take any actions the INWW deems appropriate in those capacities. Upon termination of the Service, Yahoo! will not be responsible to forward any notices, emails or other correspondence to you or to take any other actions in connection with your domain name. You will be solely responsible for all ongoing fees, as well as removing Yahoo! as the billing, technical contact and name servers in connection with your domain name, unless Yahoo! notifies you otherwise.

4. FEES AND BILLING

To pay for the Service, you must have a Yahoo! ID. You must also have a Yahoo! Wallet which will save your credit card, billing and shipping information and other information. If you do not yet have a Yahoo! ID or Yahoo! Wallet, you will be prompted to complete the registration process.

The fees for the Service are set out at http://domains.yahoo.com/services. All such fees are payable in U.S. dollars to Yahoo!, are non-refundable and non-creditable, and will automatically be charged to your Yahoo! Wallet credit card. Fees will be charged yearly, unless you purchase email services in conjunction with your domain name, in which case fees will be charged monthly. Yahoo! may alter its fees, but will provide you prior notice if those alterations will affect you. Yahoo! will automatically bill your credit card for annual service fees until you submit an online cancellation notice via your Web Console, located at http://console.domains.yahoo.com. If your credit card is invalid or you are otherwise past due in your payments for any reason, the Service may be terminated and removed from Yahoo!s servers and all the information contained therein deleted permanently. Billing will occur annually on your account start date. If you purchase email services in conjunction with your domain name, fees will be billed monthly rather than annually until cancellation notice is received. You will be charged for any extra fee features or add-ons that you subscribe to or use during each applicable billing cycle. All payments for the Service are non-refundable. If you have questions or concerns related to your bill for the Service, please contact domains-billing@yahoo-inc.com.

5. AUTOMATIC RENEWAL

Unless Yahoo! provides notice otherwise, this Service and Agreement will automatically be renewed and you will be billed as described in Section 4. If Yahoo! initially registers your domain name on your behalf, Yahoo! will automatically renew your domain name on an annual basis prior to the expiration of your domain name's initial registration period. In order to ensure that domains are renewed in a timely manner without an interruption of service, each domain billed through Yahoo will be renewed 15 days prior to each annual anniversary (multi-year domains will be renewed 15 days prior to the end of the last year). Timely payment will extend your service and domain registration term for a full year from the anniversary date. Your domain name will automatically be renewed with the registrar after the annual fee is successfully billed to the credit card stored in your Yahoo! Wallet.

6. Transferring to Yahoo!'s registrar of record

For Domains in which Yahoo! is acting as the billing contact, Yahoo! may at any time request in writing that You transfer the domain name registered for the Service to a new registrar of record, under the terms and conditions of that registrar of record. If You do not agree to this request within 30 days, You agree that Yahoo! will continue to provide the Service to You, but may, in its sole discretion, either:

(i) require You to pay an additional fee to Yahoo! for the Service in order to renew and maintain Your domain name with the prior registrar of record; or

(ii) require You to be responsible for all fees, including any renewal fees, directly with the prior registrar of record, in which case You authorize Yahoo! to cease to pay for the domain name fees as part of the Service, and change the billing contact details for the domain name from Yahoo! to You by providing Your applicable Account Information to the prior registrar of record.

7. Using a pre-existing domain name If you have previously registered a domain name with another provider and want to use it with the Service, You must request that the existing registrar change the name servers for the domain name as designated by Yahoo!, on Your behalf.

PLEASE NOTE: THE EXISTING REGISTRAR WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE REGISTRAR FOR THAT DOMAIN NAME AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ONGOING FEES FOR THAT DOMAIN NAME WITH YOUR EXISTING PROVIDER, INCLUDING RENEWAL FEES. THE FEES PAYABLE TO YAHOO! FOR THE SERVICE DO NOT INCLUDE REGISTRATION OR RENEWAL FEES OWED BY YOU TO YOUR EXISTING PROVIDER.

8. VERIFYING YOUR DOMAIN NAME INFORMATION

In compliance with ICANN regulation and the terms and conditions of the Registrar of Record, as applicable ("Required Information") and in order to minimize the risk of fraud, Yahoo! may at any time request You to verify any information required to be supplied by a registrant. If You fail to respond to any such request or fail to verify any Required Information to Yahoo!'s reasonable satisfaction, within 15 days of any such request from Yahoo!, Yahoo! may, in its sole discretion, immediately terminate Your Service and remove any of Your materials, including Your domain name, from Yahoo! servers.

9. INDEMNITY

You agree to indemnify and hold Yahoo, and its subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, agents, co-branders or other partners, and employees, harmless from any claim or demand, including reasonable attorneys' fees, made by any third party due to or arising out of Content you submit, post, transmit or make available through the Service, your use of the Service, your connection to the Service, your violation of the Agreement or your violation of any laws, regulations or rights of another.

10. TERMINATION OR TRANSFER OF DOMAIN NAME

You may terminate your Service at any time by completing the online cancellation form located at http://console.domains.yahoo.com. Please note, you will not be entitled to a refund of any fees, either initial or renewal fees, you have paid to Yahoo! in the event you terminate your Service. Also, please note that canceling the Service will not terminate other services you have purchased in conjunction with the domain name, and that you will still be responsible for any fees for such services.

Because several features are bundled in the Domains Product Service, transferring your domain away from Yahoo!, whether by modifying the name servers (redelegation) or transferring management of the domain registration to another provider, does not automatically terminate the other features in the Service you have purchased, and you will continue to be billed for the Service. To terminate your Service, complete the online cancellation form located at http://console.domains.yahoo.com.

In addition in order to comply with ICANN regulations, your domain name may not be transferred to another registrar within the first 60 days after your domain name is registered. Yahoo! may also choose to restrict domain name transfers to another reseller of Melbourne IT or transfers to Melbourne IT directly within the first 60 days after a domain is registered.

Yahoo! may, but has no duty to, immediately terminate your Service and remove any of your materials, including your domain name, from Yahoo! servers if Yahoo! receives notice that you have disputed the Service charges with your credit card company or if your credit card has been declined or for any other non-payment of Service fees.

In addition, if Yahoo! receives notice that you have disputed the domain name Service charges with your credit card company, your credit card charge has been declined or that there has been any other non-payment of domain name Service fees,

Yahoo may, in its sole discretion, immediately transfer the relevant domain name from the registrant of the domain name to Yahoo! You acknowledge that where Yahoo! transfers such domain name to Yahoo! under this clause, Yahoo! will hold all rights of the registered domain name holder in respect of that domain name , including the right to sell the domain name to a third party (where this was a right held by the original registrant in respect of the relevant domain name).

In addition, Yahoo! may, but has no duty to, immediately terminate your Service and remove any of your materials, including your domain name, from Yahoo! servers if Yahoo!, in its sole discretion, concludes that you have engaged in illegal activities, in activities or sales that may damage the rights of Yahoo! or others, or have violated or threatened to violate the terms of the Agreement or any other agreement you may have with Yahoo!. Any termination under this paragraph will take effect immediately. In the event that Yahoo! terminates your Service in connection with this paragraph, you will not be entitled to a refund of any fees you have paid to Yahoo!. In addition, Yahoo! may terminate your Service at its convenience. However, in the event that Yahoo! elects to terminate your Service at its convenience, as your only remedy, Yahoo! will refund to you a pro-rata amount of fees which you have pre-paid.

11. MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT

You can obtain assistance with technical difficulties that may arise in connection with your utilization of the Software or the Service by requesting assistance by email to domains-support@yahoo-inc.com. Yahoo! reserves the right to establish limitations on the extent of such support, and the hours at which it is available.

You are responsible for obtaining and maintaining all telephone, computer hardware and other equipment needed for its access to and use of the Software and the Service and you will be responsible for all charges related thereto.
